Kuri K9 Trail & Train is looking for a new Hike Leader to join our pack in Nanaimo.


We are Nanaimo’s elite off leash dog walking service, with a strong focus on structure and training on our pack hikes. We also offer private training sessions, board and trains, and limited boarding.


Hikes are 2 hours long, and while training and behaviour are the main focus, you must be fit enough to cover around 6km per hike. This is an all weather job - you will get wet, you will get hot - you must love the outdoors. You must also be comfortable driving a vehicle, reversing and parallel parking.


We support balanced training methods; focusing on positive reinforcement, with clear boundaries. Some of our pack members require e-collars to participate, you must be comfortable with the use of them and prepared to learn how to use them safely and humanely.


Employees are expected to actively work with, and train dogs on our hikes. Helping to create and maintain behaviours such as:


  • Loose leash walking

  • Recall

  • Sit/stays

  • Good social skills

  • Impulse control

  • Boundaries

  • And more


The ideal candidate will be focused and driven, with a desire to learn how to train dogs effectively and progress within the company. Experience working with horses or in the animal industry is an asset.


The position currently consists of four shifts 5-6 hr shifts per week.

Monday-Thursday, starting between 11am-12pm depending on the day. We are also looking to launch a new hike on Friday afternoons once settled in.


Our office is based in the Cedar/Yellowpoint area, and we have routes servicing Cedar/Yellowpoint/Chase River, and Nanaimo. You will be expected to start and end your shift at our office.


Requirements:

  • Full, clean driver’s licence - abstract required

  • Own transport to and from work (a vehicle is provided during shifts)

  • Minimum 1 year employment contract, non-compete contract required

  • Available for occasional weekend work (usually approx 10am, but flexible)

  • Reliable cellphone with camera

  • Own appropriate footwear and wet weather gear


Pay: $16.75/hr training wage for 15 shifts unless experienced, then negotiable; $18.00-$21.00/hr starting wage depending on experience. Opportunity for performance/longevity bonuses.
