WE ARE HIRING - NOV/DEC 2025
Join the Kuri K9 Trail & Train Team
Love dogs, the outdoors, and meaningful, hands-on work?
Kuri K9 Trail & Train is looking for an energetic, committed Hike Leader to join our growing pack here in Nanaimo!
We are Nanaimo’s elite off-leash dog hiking service — blending adventure, structure, and training on every hike. Alongside our signature pack hikes, we offer private training, board-and-train programs, and overnight boarding. If you’re passionate about dogs and excited to learn, this is a workplace where you can truly grow.
What the Role Looks Like
Our hikes are 2 hours long and cover around 6km. Training and behaviour are at the heart of what we do — you’ll be coaching dogs on:
-
Loose-leash walking
-
Recall
-
Sit/stays
-
Impulse control
-
Social manners
-
Boundaries and trail etiquette
-
…and so much more
You must love being outdoors in all weather. Rain, heat, mud, wind — our dogs still need adventure, and so do we! This role also requires confident driving, including reversing and parking our large Mercedes E-Sprinter.
Training Approach
We use a balanced training philosophy:
Positive reinforcement + clear, consistent boundaries.
Some of our dogs use e-collars, so you must be open to learning safe, humane, and skilled handling techniques. Full training and support are provided.
Who We’re Looking For
The ideal candidate is:
-
Focused, reliable, and driven
-
Comfortable working independently
-
Excited to learn and grow their dog-training skills
-
Physically fit and safety-minded
-
Calm, confident, and great with both dogs and people
Experience with dogs, horses, or other animal-handling roles is an asset — but a willingness to learn is just as important.
Schedule & Location
-
Monday to Friday
-
Shifts are about 5-6 hours and start between 9:15–10:15am, depending on the route
-
Opportunity to add morning pickups, increasing shifts by 2–3 hours/day
-
Additional opportunities for boarding, petsitting, and training work as your skills grow
Our office is located in the Cedar/Yellowpoint area, with service routes through Cedar, Yellowpoint, Chase River, and Nanaimo.
Requirements
-
Full, clean driver’s licence (abstract required)
-
Reliable transportation to/from work (company vehicle provided during shifts)
-
Comfortable working outdoors year-round
-
Minimum 1-year employment commitment and non-compete agreement
-
Reliable cellphone with camera
-
Appropriate footwear and all-weather gear
Pay & Perks
Pay: $20–25/hr depending on experience
Training wage: $17.85/hr for up to 15 shifts
Bonuses: Performance and longevity bonuses available
Perks Include:
-
Bring your well-behaved dog to hike (as space allows) or rest in our dog cabin
-
