FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Got a question? We have it covered. If you have a new one, let us know!

WHAT DOES KURI MEAN?

Kuri means dog in the Maori language, native to New Zealand. This is the same language the names of our Pooch Chaperones (Tui and Rua) come from.

HOW MANY DOGS DO YOU TAKE AT ONCE?

Maximum client numbers are eight for a standard hike, or four for a training hike/class. Occasionally one of our paw-fessional Pooch Chaperones will tag along, but if a pack needs some extra attention, they stay home for the day.

HOW ARE THE DOGS TRANSPORTED TO AND FROM HIKES?

We have a custom-fitted, air conditioned Dodge (or should I say... Dog...) Grand Caravan dedicated to doggy hike transport. The safety and comfort of all pack members is our top priority, with crates available for those needing a little extra space, and comfortable beds to nap on.

HOW DOES PICK UP AND DROP OFF WORK?

We arrive at your home and collect or drop them off from wherever you specify, be that the front door, a crate or the backyard. You are required to provide us with a key or access code (these are securely stored with only your dog's name to link them to you). Some newer door locks allow you to program codes for specific days only.

WILL MY DOG COME HOME DIRTY?

The answer is... probably. These are adventure hikes out in nature. Dogs are bound to find mud, dust, twigs and stinky things to roll in that you're probably happier not knowing about.
You are welcome to leave out a towel and we will clean your dog off before letting them in the house. You can also specify a 'dirty dog' location, such as a crate, if you would like them contained on those days they come home less than fresh.

HOW OLD DOES MY PUPPY NEED TO BE TO JOIN?

We are pleased to offer our one hour Train for the Trails program which is a great place to start from as young as four months, after all vaccinations have been completed. Low impact and training based, your puppy will begin gaining all the skills they need to become a skilled pack member in the future.

As for the two hour Take to the Trails hikes, your breeder and/or veterinarian will be able to support your decision here. We accept puppies from approximately 6 months old, however, we do require young dogs to attend Train for the Trails sessions prior to joining the full hikes.

WHAT TRAINING METHODS DO YOU USE FOR HIKES?

We use 'positive first' methods. Encouraging dogs to think for themselves and to work for the correct answer. We use high value treats to reward behaviour we desire, along with verbal praise. We also believe in the value of setting boundaries and creating structure for a calm and happy dog, not to mention pack. We may leave a long line on your dog to help guide them in recalling when asked, and respecting other pack members or trail users.

If your dog has been e-collar trained, we are familiar with and support the use of high quality e-collars trained in a humane manner. E-collars will not be used on your dog without prior permission and separate training sessions/proof of training.

MY DOG WEARS A MUZZLE, CAN THEY STILL JOIN YOU?

The simple answer is, of course! We don't discriminate based on the equipment your dog wears. We understand that muzzles can be worn for a variety of reasons from poop eating, to hot spot licking, to nipping. If you are providing your own muzzle, it must be a secure, well fitted basket style muzzle. This means your dog should have ample room for panting and drinking. Cloth muzzles are not permitted on our hikes.

For the safety of everybody involved, we will not accept dog aggressive or human aggressive dogs. Those who are a little cranky about their space, or struggle with appropriate bite inhibition (not looking at you Australian Shepherds...) will be accepted on a case by case basis after a consult.
